The problem
Sound familiar?
“While we are on the other line, the rest of the calls go to voicemail — and callers do not leave messages, they call the next company.”
“Front-desk coverage is a person we cannot always spare, and evenings and lunch breaks still ring.”
What the agent does
An AI phone agent answers every call on your main number, greets the caller, answers everyday questions from your own documents, routes the call to the right person, and takes a clean message when nobody is free.
Setup
How it works in Canopy
- 1. Order your main number. Under Phone → Numbers, order the local number customers will call.
- 2. Write the receptionist in AI → Profiles. Create an assistant profile, write its greeting and business facts on the General tab, and set its rules on the Rules tab.
- 3. Bind the profile to your number on the Voice tab. The profile’s Voice tab binds the assistant as the production voice agent answering that number.
- 4. Teach it your business in AI → Training. Upload the documents it answers from — hours, services, locations, FAQs.
- 5. Point the main number at it. In VoIP → Inbound rules, route the main number to the agent, with a menu or a person as fallback.

Caller
Hi, do you take walk-ins on Saturdays?
AI receptionist
We do — Saturdays from nine to one, at the Ridge Avenue shop. Would you like to book a slot?
Caller
Maybe later. Is Maria available now?
AI receptionist
Maria is with a customer. I can take a message with your name and number, or book a callback — which would you prefer?
Caller
Take a message — Dan, 555-0142.
AI receptionist
Got it, Dan. I have you at 555-0142. Maria will get the message within the hour.
